Son of is the latest Telugu film featuring veteran actor Vinod Kumar in a pivotal role. Released in theatres today, the film attempts to explore the strained relationship between a father and son. Here is how it fares.

Story:

Anand (Sai Simhadri) takes his father Venkat Rao (Vinod Kumar) to court, alleging harassment and claiming legal rights over his grandfather’s property. In response, Venkat Rao challenges his son to prove his independence and capability. Why is Venkat Rao so harsh toward Anand? What exactly is the challenge? The rest of the film revolves around this personal and legal conflict.

Plus Points:

Vinod Kumar delivers a sincere and convincing performance as a middle class father weighed down by responsibility. He effectively portrays the frustration and silent pain of a parent worried about his son’s future.

Sai Simhadri shows commitment both in front of and behind the camera. Though his performance lacks consistency, his willingness to shoulder a subject driven by family conflict is noteworthy.

The core idea of generational conflict and accountability carries relevance. The courtroom backdrop adds an interesting layer to the narrative on paper, and the second half contains a few heartfelt moments that hint at the depth the story aimed to achieve.

Minus Points:

Although the courtroom setup feels refreshing in theory, it is barely explored in execution. The legal track begins and concludes around the interval itself, which may disappoint viewers expecting extended courtroom confrontations.

For a drama built on intense relationships, performances are crucial. While Sai Simhadri shows commitment, his portrayal lacks the depth and maturity required to elevate key scenes. A more seasoned performance might have strengthened the film considerably.

The love track feels underdeveloped and unconvincing. The heroine Meera Raaj’s character arc lacks clarity, and certain decisions feel forced rather than organic. Instead of adding weight to the narrative, the romantic subplot dilutes its impact.

The father and son dynamic, which should have formed the backbone of the film, needed tighter writing and more layered exchanges to create stronger audience involvement.

Technical Aspects:

Director Satish Bathula chooses a subject rooted in personal experience, and the intention is evident. However, the screenplay lacks cohesion and sharper progression. The narrative could have benefited from stronger structuring and better casting choices.

Rishi M’s music works in parts but does little to enhance pivotal scenes. VRK Naidu’s cinematography is serviceable without standing out. Editor Amarnath A could have trimmed the first half more effectively to maintain narrative momentum. Production values are adequate for the scale of the film.

Verdict:

On the whole, Son of turns out to be a disappointing film. Despite a premise that had scope for a strong father son drama, the weak writing, inconsistent narration, and underwhelming performances make it a tiring watch. The courtroom angle is underused and the romantic track adds little value. What could have been an intense emotional story ends up as a flat and ineffective drama. It is better to explore other options this weekend.
