Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani was initially planned as a web film but was later released as a theatrical feature. Starring Sivaji and Laya in the lead roles, the film hit the big screens today. Let’s see how it fares.
Story:
Set in Kothapeta in Annamayya district, Sriram (Sivaji) is a sincere panchayat secretary who lives with his eccentric wife Uthara (Laya) and quirky their son Mittu (Rohan). One day, he gets into a quarrel with SI Vikram Vasudev (Prince). On another occasion, the SI visits Sriram’s house when he is not there. When Sriram returns, he is shocked to find the SI shot dead inside his house. Realising the seriousness of the situation, Sriram decides to dispose of the body. What happens next forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
Sivaji delivers an okay performance and fits the role of a panchayat secretary caught in a difficult situation. He manages to hold a few scenes together, and his interactions with Laya occasionally generate mild humour.
Master Rohan has limited screen time but manages to bring a few light moments whenever he appears. Laya is passable in certain scenes. A handful of comedic moments work to some extent, particularly the police checkpoint sequence and a few portions involving Ali.
Minus Points:
The biggest drawback of the film is its weak writing. The story lacks proper development and the screenplay fails to create engagement. Several unnecessary scenes and characters slow down the narrative, making both halves feel lengthy and tedious.
Many characters appear without contributing meaningfully to the plot. The MLA character and his story lack seriousness, and his gang also fails to create any real impact. Dhanraj’s character is introduced in a simple manner, but the sudden change in his arc towards the end feels unconvincing and poorly justified.
Another major issue is the inconsistent tone. Despite dealing with a serious situation involving a dead body, the characters often behave unrealistically. For instance, the female lead remains overly cheerful while they are trying to dispose of the body. In a dark comedy, the tension should drive the humour, but here the seriousness is missing and the comedy feels forced. Her over-the-top acting in certain scenes further weakens the impact.
The Ali episode feels unnecessary to the main story and appears to exist only to extend the runtime. Several scenes seem stitched together without a smooth narrative flow.
Technical Aspects:
Director Sudheer Sriram attempts to present a dark comedy but struggles with the execution. The writing by Mithil Kumar and Sudheer Sriram feels outdated, and the screenplay lacks engaging moments or dramatic highs. A stronger narrative approach and better character development could have improved the film.
Ritwik Reddy’s cinematography, Ranjin Raj’s music, and the production values are adequate. However, Balu Manoj D’s editing leaves room for improvement. The 2-hour-26-minute runtime could have been trimmed significantly to make the film more engaging.
Verdict:
On the whole, Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani attempts to be a dark crime comedy but ends up as a tedious watch. Sivaji and Rohan manage to make a few scenes work, but the weak writing, uneven execution, excessive filler, and forced climax make the film difficult to sit through. There are many other options to entertain yourself this weekend.
